Back to school

Detailed Information Regarding Procedures Can Be Found Below

New Student Registration: New student registration will be available by appointment only on Friday, July 31, and Thursday, August 6. To set an appointment time, please email Olivia Bush (Obush@smithcoedu.net) or Kelly Goodman (goodmank1@smithcoedu.net). Documents needed for registration include social security card, proof of residence, birth certificate, and custody papers (if applicable).

Virtual Learning Option: A fully virtual learning option via OdysseyWare will be available to qualifying families. Signing up for the Smith County Schools Virtual Academy Requires a Semester-long commitment. Students who decide to attend virtually will be assigned a teacher to monitor their progress, but parents will need to make sure their child is completing all requirements while at home. The virtual learning contract is available here.  For more information about the difference between virtual and traditional learning, click here.

Remote Learning: Only students who choose to attend school in the traditional manner are eligible for remote learning when scheduled. During the staggered period, ALL students will be expected to participate and learn each day, regardless of whether they attend physically or not. Once we exit the staggered period and return to a normal schedule, students should be prepared to continue learning remotely if circumstances necessitate school closures.

Student Half Day: Staff and students return for the half day on August 5. Buses will not run on this day. Students will be assigned a homeroom prior to August 5, which will be communicated via school email. Students who attend will enter the building and proceed directly to their homeroom class. Students who have their own devices are encouraged to bring them, and students needing a device will be assigned one. Homeroom teachers will help students ensure they are enrolled in the Google Classroom for all their classes.

*August 7 – 12 Staggered Schedule: Students will be divided into 4 groups based on their last name. One group will attend in person each day, while all other students will have remote learning days.

*August 13-14 Remote Learning Days: All SCHS students will learn remotely, while all SCHS faculty and staff report to school as normal. Students and staff will have an opportunity to practice full remote learning on these days. Teachers will be interacting with students via Google Classroom during regular school hours.

*August 17-28 Staggered Schedule: Once all students have been assigned technology as needed and have had an opportunity to practice social distancing and other wellbeing guidelines in small groups, students will be divided into two groups based on their last name. One group will attend Mondays and Wednesdays while the other attends Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Fridays and on days not present at SCHS, students will have remote learning days.

*Flexibility will be provided to families with students at multiple schools in Smith County or who have different last names. Contact the principals at each school to make arrangements.
