GHS Senior Information-Class of 2020

April 24, 2020-Update

On April 9, 2020, the Tennessee State Board of Education held an emergency meeting to adopt changes to graduation requirements for seniors across the state. Below is a summary of these emergency changes. Any other issues will be listed below for clarification. These changes only apply to the class of 2020

  • 3rd nine week grades were closed as of March 13 (GHS last day in school) and counted as the second-semester grade. No final exams will be given. Per Tennessee State Board Meeting (4/9/20)- No student can receive a grade lower than the grade they had on March 13, 2020.  Students may be given opportunities to raise their grade.  Students that are failing a course (S1 and S2 avg is less than 70 as of March 13th) must be given grading opportunities to achieve a passing grade and earn credit for the course.  Students that are passing a course (grade above 70 as of March 13th) may complete **assignments/grading opportunities to raise their 3rd 9 weeks average. **These are not required and cannot make a student’s grade drop below the grade the student had on March 13, 2020.
  • If seniors would like to improve their 2nd semester grades, your teachers are available to work with you to complete this work. Please reach out to your teacher.  If you are unable to contact the teacher, please contact your guidance counselor for assistance. Teacher’s emails can be found in the Google classroom set up for each particular class or on the school website under staff, https://www.smithcoedu.com/o/gordonsville-high/staff.
  • If seniors are failing a class and need to recover any credits, their teacher will be in contact with them in order to receive make-up work in order to receive the credit in order to graduate. It would be a good idea for students to reach out to teachers as well in an email through Google classroom or the school website, https://www.smithcoedu.com/o/gordonsville-high/staff.
  • School administrators and teachers will be in contact with seniors regarding graduation status and/or individual credit requirements this week.
  • Seniors must have earned a minimum of 20 course credits, including 4 English Language Arts; 4 Mathematics; 3 Science; 2 Social Studies; and 7 of any other type of course for credit.
  • If you had met the requirements for graduation on March 13, and pending a review of your records, you will be considered a graduate in the Class of 2020.  If you are unsure or need clarification, contact your guidance counselor, chandra.gillilan@smithcoedu.net
  • Students in the 12th grade during the 2019-20 school year who were enrolled in a Tennessee public school during their 11th-grade year and who did not take the ACT or SAT shall not be required to take the ACT or SAT for graduation purposes.
  • TN Promise Scholarship-Seniors should be receiving emails concerning updates.  To remain eligible for Tennessee Promise, students (not parents or guardians) will be responsible for watching a team meeting webinar prior to May 15, 2020 at 11:59 PM CT.  Students must also complete community service hours by July 1, 2020.  There are virtual opportunities available, this information has been sent in emails from TN Achieves.
  • Seniors enrolled in a statewide dual credit class (Stats, US History, Sociology, World History, Intro to Plant) will have the opportunity to test in September of 2020 in an attempt to earn this dual credit.
  • Students taking dual enrollment classes through Vol State should continue working in order to earn the college credit.  Follow the guidelines and dates through the Vol State portal.
  • Any Senior who is in Credit Recovery needs to finish this before May 14.
