Smith County Schools have been providing alternative educational opportunities to our students during the COVID-19 school closure.  Initially, the primary concern of teachers and school leaders were ensuring that students were provided access to nutritious meals and while continuing to provide opportunities for students to continue their learning.  We will continue to provide both through the remainder of the school year.

However, with the recent announcement of Governor Lee recommending that schools not re-open during the 2019-20 school year, the Tennessee State Board of Education met on April 9, 2020 to adopt emergency rules that affect students this school year. Graduation requirements for 2020 graduates have been reduced to twenty (20) credits consisting of 4 math, 4 English, 3 sciences, 2 social studies and 7 elective credits (any other courses).  Additionally, no student can receive a grade lower than the grade they had on March 13, 2020 and school districts may provide opportunities for students to raise their grade.

In Smith County Schools, there will be no 4th Term grades nor will students be given a final exam. However, students may complete assignments/grading opportunities to raise their 3rd 9-week average. These are not required and cannot make a student’s grade drop below the grade the student had on March 13th. If students would like to raise their 2nd semester grade, please complete the assignments and grading opportunities that teachers are making available Monday, April 27th through Friday, May 15th. You may contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions.  Go to smithcoedu.com for updates and links to each school’s website under the Sites tab.
